Venerable Fr. Joseph Vithayathil: Co-Founder and Spiritual Pillar of the Congregation of the Holy Family

Venerable Fr. Joseph Vithayathil stands as a towering figure in the spiritual history of the Congregation of the Holy Family (CHF), not only as its co-founder but as the steadfast spiritual father of Saint Mariam Thresia. Born in 1865 in Puthenpally, Kerala, he was a man of deep prayer, pastoral wisdom, and unwavering commitment to the will of God. His priestly journey was marked by humility, discernment, and a profound sensitivity to the movements of the Holy Spirit.

When Saint Mariam Thresia began to experience mystical visions and a burning desire to serve families through a life of consecration, it was Fr. Vithayathil who recognized the authenticity of her call. He became her spiritual director, offering her guidance through trials, misunderstandings, and ecclesial discernment. His role was not merely administrative or supportive—he was a co-visionary, helping to shape the very charism of the congregation.

It was under his direction that the “solitary house” was built in Puthenchira in 1913, which later became the cradle of the Congregation. He drafted the initial rule of life for the sisters and stood beside Mariam Thresia when the congregation was officially established on May 14, 1914. Appointed as chaplain, he nurtured the fledgling community with fatherly care, ensuring that its mission—to sanctify families through prayer, service, and compassionate presence—remained rooted in Christ.

After the death of Saint Mariam Thresia in 1926, Fr. Vithayathil continued to shepherd the young congregation with remarkable dedication. He expanded its reach, supported new vocations, and safeguarded its spiritual identity. His writings and testimonies remain invaluable sources for understanding the sanctity of Saint Mariam Thresia and the early spirit of the CHF.

His legacy is not only etched in the history of the congregation but also in the hearts of those who continue to walk the path he helped pave—a path of humble service, deep faith, and unwavering love for families.
